SALLY ROGERS performing SEPTEMBER 14

On Saturday, September 14, singer-songwriter and recording artist Sally Rogers will perform traditional, contemporary, and original ballads and songs, interwoven with life stories.

Rogers began her career as a touring musician in 1979 and soon was performing on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. She has toured at least two continents and any number of countries singing and writing songs that touch the heart and the mind, accompanied by guitar and dulcimer. Also a music educator, she has released fifteen recordings, including some award-winning recordings for children. In addition, she has released collaborative recordings with other artists, such as her latest album, We Are Welcomed, with Claudia Schmidt.

Doors will open at 7:30. Tickets, available at the door, are $15. The Church of St. Andrew (www.standrewsmhd.org) is at 135 Lafayette Street (Route 114) in Marblehead, near the Salem line. The church is handicapped accessible.

SATURDAY NIGHT in MARBLEHEAD, a concert series at the Church of St. Andrew, originated in the 1970s as a weekly series and ran into the 1990s. After some years of dormancy, it resumed as a monthly series in November 2016.

SNIM was the first, or among the first, to introduce to the Boston area some of the classic voices of North American folk music and songwriting in a concert setting. Patty Larkin, Suzanne Vega, Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys, Cindy Kallet, the late Canadian folk icon Stan Rogers, and many others were given a welcoming performance space to create their art in front of appreciative audiences.

Our artistic director, Bob Franke. Bob Franke, artistic director of the series for its first ten years, is again the guiding force behind the concert series. The current goals are  similar to those of the original series: to welcome the community into an alcohol-free space where they will be consistently entertained and inspired by music and the hand-made musical theater of artists from near and far, who in turn will be offered a listening audience and a fair wage.

“There is a new generation at this point,” Franke says, “who has been conned into thinking that, in order to be entertained at this level, they have to pay a hundred dollars a ticket and go to a large hall or stadium. We’d like to introduce them to a truth I’ve discovered over the years: genius is ubiquitous if you know what to listen for, and what to give it to enable it to grow. Artists of every generation have power to make us laugh, weep, and even grow some ourselves. St. Andrew’s believes in the kind of hospitality that delights in bringing these artists to Marblehead and the North Shore. The folks I hired for the series the first time around were great before they got famous, and we did our best to make sure that they loved this place as much as we loved what they did for us with their music.”
