I’m a Good Person! Isn’t that Enough?

Race & Racism Workshop spaces still available

featuring Debby Irving,
racial justice educator & writer;
author of
Waking Up White

This workshop is designed to support white people in making a key paradigm shift: from trying to “fix” and “help” those of other races, to acknowledging internalized views of white superiority and understanding how such views perpetuate racism at all levels.

Dedicated to exploring the impact white skin can have on perception and how individuals can help themselves and others change misconceptions and attitudes, Debby Irving leads workshops and presentations around the country. She shares her journey from seeing the world through her own white-skewed belief system to questioning the racial disparities she could see and feel.

Irving  offers first-hand insight to the everyday perpetuation of racial inequality by well-intentioned white people.  A community organizer and classroom teacher for 25 years, she grappled with racial injustice without understanding racism as a systemic issue or her own whiteness as an obstacle to it. Waking Up White tells the story of how she went from well-meaning to well-doing. The book functions as both a “Racism 101” for white people and a rare exposé on whiteness for people of color. By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions, she offers a fresh perspective on bias, stereotypes, manners, and tolerance.

Light refreshments will be available.
